Today, my family and I went on a routine trip to the supermarket. After a few minutes of choosing the items, adding up all the prices with my trusty calculator in my phone and piling up all the items (with my son's help) on the cashier counter, there was a total of six bags. Some were light. Others were heavy. But regardless of the weight, if you put them all together, it still has some weight. Typically, I have a bag boy help us deliver our bags to the car using a car. But since there weren't that many bags, I opted to carry them.
As I walked, the plastic bags of groceries started feeling heavy. And I walked faster, I felt the carrying loops of the bags start to sink in my skin. I didn't get cut but I felt that it was starting to get painful.
I placed the bags down for a while and, somehow, started to complain. I thought, "Man, these bags are heavy. It's a long walk to the car and my arms are getting tired. Not to mention, my fingers are starting to feel some pain."
But as I mumbled in my head, another voice reminded me.
"Good for you, you have fingers. Good for you, you can walk and carry those things around. Good for you, you have groceries to bring home. Other people are not as blessed as you."
I believe it was the Holy Spirit talking to me. I knew deep in my heart that God was teaching me to be thankful of my "inconveniences." True. A lot of people would give up everything just to climb a flight of stairs or walk a mile or even carry groceries with two hands and arms. And here I am thinking about how painful it was or how far the car was.
Oftentimes, we need to be thankful of the little things we take for granted. We just don't know how blessed we are.
How about you? What are the things you take for granted that other people would die to have?
